Do You Really Need a Loyalty Program? It Depends.

One of the most common questions I hear from businesses is: “Do we need a loyalty program?”

My answer? It depends.

A loyalty program is not a shortcut to customer retention, it’s a tool. And like any tool, it only works if used correctly. Too often, businesses focus on building a program before defining its purpose. They assume that launching a points-based system will automatically increase customer loyalty.

But loyalty doesn’t come from a program. It comes from the relationship you build with your customers.

Let’s break it down.
Why a Loyalty Program Might Not Be the Answer
A well-designed loyalty program can be a game-changer. But a poorly designed one? Just another cost centre.
The biggest mistake businesses make is assuming that a loyalty program = retention strategy.

Before you think about tiers, points, or discounts, ask yourself:
  • What specific customer behaviour are we trying to encourage?
  • What problem are we solving for our customers?
  • How does this align with our broader customer experience strategy?

If you can’t answer these clearly, your business is not ready for a loyalty program.

When a Loyalty Program Works (And When It Doesn’t)
A great loyalty program reinforces existing customer habits, deepens engagement, and makes staying with a brand effortless.

Loyalty Programs Work Best When:
  • They enhance an existing behaviour (e.g., coffee subscriptions, frequent flyer miles)
  • They offer value beyond discounts (e.g., MECCA Beauty Loop’s VIP experience)
  • They create an emotional connection (e.g., Thankyou’s purpose-driven model)
But a Loyalty Program Won’t Fix:
  • A weak brand or product experience
  • Poor customer retention due to lack of engagement
  • A business that doesn’t understand its customers
No one stays loyal to a brand because of points alone – they stay because they want to.

How to Build Loyalty Before You Build a Program
Instead of launching a loyalty program just because competitors have one, focus on earning customer loyalty first.

Here’s how:
  • Deliver a consistent, high-value experience: Make customers want to return.
  • Give them a reason to stay engaged: Focus on emotional loyalty, not just discounts.
  • Align your customer strategy with retention goals: Ensure a seamless experience across all touchpoints.

A loyalty program should enhance an already strong relationship, not act as a quick fix for customer disengagement.

The Role of a Customer Strategy Audit
Before diving into a loyalty program, conducting a Customer Strategy Audit is essential. This process helps you:
  • Understand Your Customers Deeply: Gain insights into their needs, preferences, and pain points.
  • Identify Gaps in the Customer Journey: Pinpoint where you might be losing potential loyalists.
  • Align Your Offerings with Customer Expectations: Ensure your products or services meet or exceed what your target audience desires.

By auditing your current customer strategies, you can determine whether a loyalty program is the right tool or if other areas need attention first.

Better Still — Ask Your Customers
Want to know if a loyalty program is the right move for your business? Just ask your customers.

They’ll tell you what they want. Chances are, they’re already waiting for you to ask.

A quick survey, direct conversations, or analysing existing customer feedback can give you more clarity than any competitor benchmarking ever will.
Final Thought: Do You Need a Loyalty Program?
If you haven’t nailed customer experience, retention, and engagement, a loyalty program won’t fix that.

But if your customers already love your brand and just need an extra reason to stay, a loyalty program can be one of the most powerful tools in your strategy.
